Cockpit Country Pilot Project (2023)
The pilot program installed Starlink broadband at a Maroon primary school in Cockpit Country, restoring communication, online learning, and access to resources for teachers and families. The project proved that digital connectivity which brings dignity and opportunity — even in Jamaica’s most remote communities — and became the foundation for JRF’s national rollout initiative.
Phase 1 — Connectivity, Education & Literacy
Our pilot project has been so successful that we aim to equip 50 rural schools with Starlink broadband. We’re raising funds to buy a Starlink unit for rural schools so students and teachers can reliably access online learning tools, assignments, and communication, even when traditional service is spotty or unavailable. A single setup can make a huge difference, from day-to-day homework support to teacher resources and digital literacy.
What we’re funding (costs in JMD and approx. USD):
-
Starlink hardware: JMD 59,990 (about $374.83)
-
Mobility Mount (accessory): JMD 12,200 (about $76.23)
-
Monthly service, unlimited roaming: JMD 16,000 (about $99.97 per month)
Total upfront (hardware + mount): JMD 72,190 (about $451.05)
Estimated first year including service: JMD 264,190 (about $1,650.70)
If you’d like to help, you can either contribute toward the one-time equipment cost or sponsor a month of service. Any amount helps, and we will be happy to share updates and photos once it’s installed and running.
